A hilltop sanctuary
On the acropolis, the Cypriot goddess later called Aphrodite was worshipped. Archaeology records long use of the site, rather than a single simple origin story.
A harbour under the waterline
The Department of Antiquities places the external harbour in front of the agora; its remains are now beneath the sea. An inner basin also gave sailors shelter.
Coast, commerce and caution
The city had connections with the Aegean and Syro-Palestinian coast. “Phoenician cult” is useful context for regional exchange, but the sanctuary’s evidence should not be reduced to one label.
