Limassol’s sister cities: a dated municipal record

Limassol Municipality publishes a dated list of eleven twinning relationships. Read chronologically, it records links formed between 1970 and 2001, beginning with Rhodes and extending to cities around the Mediterranean and further afield.

A historical visitor guide based on the institutional sources linked below. Interpretation and practical reading notes by BEST.

1970–1984: the first entries

The municipal list dates the Rhodes link to 19 June 1970 and Alexandria to 25 November 1972. Thessaloniki follows on 30 June 1984, with Ioannina on 2 July 1984. These are the dates supplied by the municipality for the relationships; the list does not describe individual exchange programmes.

1989–1992: a wider network

Heraklion is dated 25 March 1989 and Niederkassel 29 March 1989. Marseille follows on 3 May 1992, and Nanjing on 24 September 1992. The entries place European and Asian municipal links in the same civic record.

1998–2001: later entries

The list continues with Zakynthos on 4 April 1998, Haifa on 9 September 2000 and Patras on 1 September 2001. Together with the earlier entries, these make eleven named relationships on the source page.

What the record tells a visitor

Twinning is part of modern municipal history, alongside the buildings and monuments encountered on a city walk. It records a formal relationship between places, rather than a claim that their histories are identical.

The published list establishes names and dates. It does not establish the present frequency of visits, school exchanges, exhibitions or other activities. For a particular programme, use its own announcement or archive rather than assuming one from the existence of a twinning link.
